Get Jollified!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

‘Twas the weeks before Christmas and all through The Zoom,
Zoomers were fighting off holiday gloom.
The projects were done, to the clients with care,
In hopes that AR would soon be there.

When out on the Internet arose such a clatter,
When asked, Zoomers said, “Why nothing’s the matter!”
Away to the laptops they flew in a flash,
Started the webcam and cleared all the cache.

Zoomers engaged in the holiday fun,
Added hats, beards and noses, each and everyone.
Twas a Jollified Christmas, brought straight from Zoom,
From there on out, no more holiday gloom.

From our stockings to yours, we are pleased to bring you Jollified, a festive holiday Augmented Reality flash application. Not unlike elves, we have been tinkering and fussing over Jollified for weeks, in the hopes of bringing you tidings of cheer and well wishes.

To get Jollified, please watch the video below and then visit the official Jollified website. Play around, snap a photo of your Jollified creations and share the merry with family and friends.

‘Tis the season to get Jollified!

The lunch-off of the century!

Monday, August 17th, 2009

pkvsnohosAugust is officially vacation month. Zoomers and clients alike are taking advantage of the final weeks of summer to head out of town and relax, which leaves those of us left behind with some big responsibilities.

We, for instance, are left with the duty of eating lunch EVERY day. Where to eat? What to order? Whoo. I’m tired already. I need a vacation.

But despite the taxing demands of feeding ourselves every day, I must say we’ve been doing pretty well. We’ve foraged, brought leftovers, ventured out into the neighborhood for sustenance. See, running a marketing communications agency isn’t that hard!

On Thursday, though, Eva raised the stakes. She’s on vacation in California, and suggested from afar that the studio enjoy a delicious lunch from Noho’s Hawaiian Cafe. This got all of us hula’d up, and we dug into a delicious meal of Phil’s Ono Chicken, rice and heavenly macaroni salad. Then Friday rolled around and Tim, not to be outdone, suggested boldly that we partake in a feast from PK Thai in the Pearl. Duty-bound, we agreed. A delicious feast it was.

Taking part in this Zoom Lunch-Off was an incredible challenge, and one that we faced with courage and teamwork. We had some big shoes to fill, but us non-vacationers stepped up and took one for the team. In the end, it was a “thai”, and there was “noho” way we could decide which lavish meal brought more delight to us Zoomers. We were simply happy that we could carry the weight of such responsibility with our chins held high, our stomachs full, and a smile on our faces.

Zoom Creates Goes to the Derby

pinewood_derby

Pinewood Derby, that is. This weekend, defying the crushing heat, three gentlemen Zoomers competed in the very exciting 2009 Adult Pinewood Derby competition. They handcrafted their wee little cars from a regulation block of wood, then sent them flying down the track to vie for championship status. With sexy results!

7thcoolestGreg’s Subaru, shown here in a diorama that depicts his car’s actual neighborhood habitat, won 2nd Overall and 2nd Coolest.

Kris’s eerily lifelike Jeep (complete with tiny Kris inside) won 13th Coolest.

And Kurtis’s Linux Racer won 7th Coolest, an honor he celebrated by making a commemorative T-shirt to wear to work today.

Congratulations, racers! We applaud your creativity, craftsmanship and speed.

BLOG

So, it would be safe to assume that as bloggers, we at Zoom Creates are also blog readers. And what exactly do we like to read, you may ask? Oh geez. It’s all across the board with us Zoomers. Some read for pleasure, some read for knowledge, some read for a laugh.

In today’s Etc. blog, we’re going to offer up our favorites, so you can quite possibly love them too. They’re in no particular order—we enjoy them all!

On A Deadline

Here at Zoom Creates, we like to think of marketing, web development, design and account services as a bit of an art. We are professionals, after all, who fine-tune our craft with the focus and detail of a team of surgeons.

There are times, though, when the rubber meets the road, a deadline is just around the corner and things get messy. Fun, but messy. We look around for the secret talents that lie within our Zoom family, because sometimes a project needs one final edit to make it perfect and it needs to be an inside job.

This is one of the joys of working at Zoom Creates: each of our members possess an arsenal of talent for the work they do 40 hours a week. But what about the other 128 hours out of the week? Well … take a look.

On any given day, you may find a Zoomer seeking out Complementary Colors for a daily photo blog, or perhaps applying makeup for an upcoming stage appearance with Pink Noise. You might run into one of our principals at a model train show, or see a Zoomer at a specialty shoe shop feeding her passion for footwear. Other Zoomers take pleasure in gallivanting across the globe, taking the Flat Design Team with them, or brewing their own Craft Beer (pun intended).

Regardless of how the other 128 hours are spent, as a firm we take great pride in the abilities we exhibit in and out of the office. And if you’re wondering what’s taking place behind the curtain in the photo above, just know that we will make the deadline for the project at hand and the result will be fabulous—even if the production itself was not glamorous. And we’ll have  had a great time producing the results-oriented work we are known for.

Oh, the places we’ll go!

postcardsIt’s summer, my friends. Time for warm evenings, BBQs, camping and yard work; lemonade, beer, ball games and swimming pools. And vacation. Let’s not forget about vacation!

First, let’s review the basics. To paraphrase Wikipedia: “In the United Kingdom, vacation once specifically referred to the long summer break introduced by William the Conqueror from Normandy to facilitate the grape harvest. Vacation=Wine! We can all get behind that, right?

Furthermore, “vacation, in English-speaking North America, describes recreational travel, such as a short pleasure trip, or a journey abroad. Most of the rest of the English-speaking world says holiday, rather than vacation.” So along with our dear inches and feet, we Americans are really sticking to our guns by saying “vacation.” Go us.

Dog Duty

hoss-party

Last Wednesday we had a birthday celebration at Zoom for Eva, Shannon and Kurtis. Everyone turned 25 this year. Of course, since it was “Hungry Hump Day”, the hounds were in attendance.

What is Hungry Hump Day, you ask? It’s the name we’ve given to bagel Wednesday. Every Wednesday, bagels magically appear in the studio–usually accompanied by multiple cream cheeses, lox, tomatoes, avocados, capers and more. Inevitably, some of this deliciousness falls onto the floor and that is where the dogs really come in handy. They don’t beg but they are never far off, mingling, watching, biding their time, waiting for just a crumb to hit the floor.  When it drops, they spring into action, lick the floor clean then sniff out a two foot perimeter to make sure they didn’t miss anything.

At the party, I am pretty sure they helped “clean up” swedish meatballs, fruit, crackers, bread, cheese and veggies, and may well have tasted their first champagne.

LightsCategory-2Question: How Many Zoomers does it take to change over to Compact Florescent Bulbs?
Answer: 1, but she has to be really stubborn.

We are ever so fortunate to work in a beautiful, creative and energizing environment. Not only do we get to fraternize with four legged co-workers, we’re also the recipients of daily feeding, encouragement and a camaraderie that borders on, and sometimes crosses over to, the familial. We’re not just fortunate, we’re plain damn lucky.

Last year I got a whim, as I am wont to do, that since we were already recycling, we should step it up a notch and convert our lighting over to The Compact Flourescents. Easy you say! No. We have 10 very different, very stylish light sources scattered throughout our studio. Each of them of course, takes a different size and wattage. And so, friends, I began my quest. The small spots? Those were easy! Our Magnificent Modernicas? No Problem!  The primary Studio can lights? Insert the sound of screeching tires and honking horns with a side of cursing.
