Hello Zoom, an Android App Tutorial

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

In my last post, I talked about the neat little phones that me and Justin picked up (not the phone that Justin won, lucky…), the Samsung Vibrant. It’s an Android powered phone, with an awesome screen and all that jazz. Feel free to check out that post for all my hype, because this post is about writing Android apps.

Most beginner tutorials out there that I found over the last few weeks have just regurgitated the Hello World demo app from Google. I found that pretty useless, because Google has a perfectly fine demo on how to print text to the screen. I set out to build a little app that displays an image, has button, can update the screen, and gives user feedback (I used the vibration feature of my phone). I even had enough time to set up a basic options menu, so that will be in this tutorial too.

I won’t be covering how to set up your development IDE, as Google has done a great job with that too. I followed the tutorial on setting up the Android API in Eclipse, and was up and running without a hitch in about 30 minutes (there was a lot to download). I developed this app on Ubuntu 10.04, but I’m pretty sure that you can use this code on any platform. Click through to get started!

One page websites: love ‘em or leave ‘em?

Friday, June 18th, 2010

I ran across this article on D-Lists the other day and then I got to thinking of different one page websites I’ve run across and how I felt about the user experience. A growing trend in web development is one page websites. Rather than lead viewers to different pages, usually it involves information being displayed in a drop down format. Although I’ve included screen shots, be sure to check out the actual sites to get a feel for how they display information. Do you find it to be user friendly? Do you prefer information to be displayed on different pages? Whaddayathink?

IndoFolio — this site uses an especially unique method; when a navigational link is clicked on, information scrolls side to side. I like the idea, but I don’t know if it’s actually easier or harder to take in information. I can see how the horizontal scrolling could be distracting for some sites. For creative sites (like this one) I think it adds to the experience. For a site that is heavy on information and text, I would prefer to see it displayed in the standard format. Additionally, unless the site scrolls seamlessly, I can see how it would detract from the overall quality of the site.

Fun new toys!

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

newMachinesThe developers over here at Zoom Creates got some fun new toys yesterday! In order to code and be awesome, our leaders have given us free range on newegg.com to pick out our new systems and accessories. I will admit that they love us so much that a few items came from other places on the interwebs, but for the most part it was one big bulk order. Instead of giving you the full itinerary of our order, I’ll just let you know the coolest parts of this oh-so-happy of days.

Kris got:
HP Pavilion DV7-1270. This machine is a powerful beast! 17-inch monitor on this bad boy, with the full keyboard including the num pad on the right. He’s moving right ahead and getting rid of that “OS” Vista and installing Windows 7 RC 1. When it comes out this fall, I’m sure we’ll get him all up to date.

Kurtis got:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y650. First things first, I wiped the proprietary off that thing and installed Sidux! Soon to be dual boot with Chakra! To make my Linux workstation complete, they even bought me this rad keyboard from ZaReason without the dirty logos on the meta keys. I love it here!

Justin got:
Toshiba NB205. Cute little netbook that’s light and has a huge battery life, so Justin can run around the office and go to all those meetings.

Overall, this was one of the best Christmas-In-July events ever! Woo Hoo!
