You Inspire Me.

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle

If we are what we do, are we also what we repeatedly see? Even subconsciously? My partner and I have been in the throes of a kitchen remodel for nearly three months. Early on, I knew that I didn’t want to go to a lighting store and buy the “Latest in Lighting” I wanted something unique, warm and well, a little glittery.

One of my favorite stores here in Portland is Lounge Lizard. Over the years, I’ve purchased several vintage lights, miscellaneous homegoods and furniture from them. When I went in to select my lighting, I got lucky, because Chris, the owner was there and he shares my passion. We spent a couple of hours putting things together. I even got to go into the “Secret Back Room” to poke around.

Here is a portion of the end result.

And here is what I see every day in the Studio.

zoomlights2Until the electrician hung them, I didn’t even notice the similarities. Sublime. And, evidently, inspired. The floor is green marmoleum, in the same color family as the wall behind me here at the studio, the cabinets are black, mimicking the color of choice for a lot of our clothing. The walls are not orange, only because my partner put her foot down, but I got as close as I could.

The kitchen is still not done. We’re down to the minutia – Baseboards, backsplash, trim and crown. I am enthralled by what is evolving within our home, especially after seven years of cursing the previous kitchen.

For your continued pleasure, a vignette of our work in progress.

Mrs. Knightly is pretty pleased thus far.

Happy Holidays and here’s to Peace on Earth in our lifetime.

Cheers!

Get Jollified!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

‘Twas the weeks before Christmas and all through The Zoom,
Zoomers were fighting off holiday gloom.
The projects were done, to the clients with care,
In hopes that AR would soon be there.

When out on the Internet arose such a clatter,
When asked, Zoomers said, “Why nothing’s the matter!”
Away to the laptops they flew in a flash,
Started the webcam and cleared all the cache.

Zoomers engaged in the holiday fun,
Added hats, beards and noses, each and everyone.
Twas a Jollified Christmas, brought straight from Zoom,
From there on out, no more holiday gloom.

From our stockings to yours, we are pleased to bring you Jollified, a festive holiday Augmented Reality flash application. Not unlike elves, we have been tinkering and fussing over Jollified for weeks, in the hopes of bringing you tidings of cheer and well wishes.

To get Jollified, please watch the video below and then visit the official Jollified website. Play around, snap a photo of your Jollified creations and share the merry with family and friends.

‘Tis the season to get Jollified!

Build A Better Dialog Box With jQuery

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

dialogboxfailLet’s face it…  JavaScript “alert” notifications are boring and can be annoying.  They are ugly and make ding-y sounds when appearing. However, you still need to notify the user upon certain events.  What is a better way to display a dialog box to web users?  Using  jQuery, of course!

EXAMPLES:

First, let’s have an example of the “old” way of doing things with an alert box.  Click Here

Now, the new hotness example:  Click Here

The script is fairly simple, and requires very little code to implement.  No additional images are required, although they can be added on the DIV for an even more-stylized look. The effect is very smooth in comparison to the traditional alert box.  Also, this event can be applied to nearly any HTML element, including links, divs, images, buttons, etc. (more…)

Flash Camera

Monday, December 14th, 2009

On a recent project (which will be revealed later this week) we needed to save an image created in a Flash application, using AS3 and PHP. It turned out to be really easy. Here’s how we did it…

Winter Design Showcase

Friday, December 11th, 2009

The countdown to the holidays have begun, and with that we often get a handful of requests to create or revamp a design using a seasonal theme. The holidays are not only about snowflakes and Christmas trees anymore. New design trends and styles are always emerging and keeping us designers on our toes. This year, I found a use of unexpected color, form, and technique. Holiday design doesn’t always have to be extremely different either, traditional styles can be comforting to the audience and allow your designs to become timeless and long-lasting. Check out the showcase of winter designs to get you inspired this holiday season.

Awesome Google Chrome Ads

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

I think our web developers are brainwashing me or something. Lately I am less stoked by Apple and increasingly stoked on all things Google – especially, Chrome, Google’s new web browser. It has been available for Windows for sometime and was just released for Intel based Macs earlier this week. It is definitely fast and worth taking for a test drive.

I don’t know why or how but I have been oblivious to all the ads/videos promoting Chrome. They are incredible. The most recent one promoting Chrome’s features is amazingly analog. It animates the mouse arrow with Muppet-like technology, implements knitting, water freezing, stacked dominoes and mercury. It’s an interesting angle to take for something that is so high-tech and is extremely captivating. I can’t remember the last time i was so engaged watching a demonstration on tabbed browsing or internet security. It really gives things a tangible understanding.

You can watch them all in a row or one at a time by clicking on a link in the YouTube window at the end of the clip ( something else I hadn’t seen before, this time from YouTube ).

Here is just the opposite. A no less amazing, but high-tech, 2 1/2 D animated spot by  Motion Theory.

The Google Chrome Channel on YouTube is chock full of wildly creative videos. If ever in need of inspiration, definitely check them out.

Back to the Basics

iStock_000005624791XSmallWe have an intern coming in next week to hang out with us nerds. He’s a highschool student that would like to see what the day to day tasks of a web programmer are. I’ve talked to him about what he will be doing and what to brush up on. Here are a list of sites that I recommended him click through to brush up on some of the basics of the tools that we use. These are in no particular order.

  • HTML Goodies – This site was one of the first that I used to help me understand HTML and JavaScript. A little outdated, but still great for fundamental learning.
  • Tizag PHP Tutorial – Basics of PHP. This website does an amazing job of putting complex concepts into words that everyone can understand.
  • MySQL Introduction – From the MySQL website, an introduction.
  • W3Schools – Straight from the people who make the standards we love and use, you can learn a bunch on their site about the RIGHT way to do things. Topics in PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, jQuery, CSS and XHTML are where you can learn the tools we use.
  • PHP Screncasts – Some good free video screencasts that show you some of the basic aspects of PHP. Buy it for the advanced videos.

There are more places online that can teach you our toolset. Google is great if you know what you are searching for. The internet is a great thing, and can teach you just about anything you want, especially if it relates to computers and programming.

Turquoise Takes 2010

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Pantone just announced its color of the year for 2010, Turquoise 15-5519. Pantone describes this color as “an inviting, luminous hue… Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.” I couldn’t agree more. I love the use of Turquoise in design. It can be bold, fun and a little edgy and yet is also calm and tranquil. Here is a round up of some nice designs using colors in this family. Enjoy the escape!

The Seven Deadly Sins of Social Media

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Picture this: you are at a beautiful wedding. the bride is gorgeous in white, the ceremony has begun, the couple are seconds away from officially becoming “man and wife” and…. the groom pauses to post a tweet?

This really happened over the weekend when Dana Hanna paused momentarily, pulled out his cell phone and tweeted the following:

So, this begs the question: at what point does the speed demon of social media become a train wreck? The internet abounds with examples of destructive social media endeavors, but the one we’ll share today is the Seven Deadly Sins of Social Media.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Social Media

Let’s get at it. This list is in no particular order of importance. There is no hierarchy of social media sins. And for those reluctant to reform, you can’t simply choose the least of the seven evils and get away with it – they are all bad. (more…)

Use your social media manners!

win

As with anything, there is a time, place, and etiquette surrounding social media. Without some simple guidelines, social media has and will get completely out of control. Here’s some genius ideas to keep you and your brand worry free and always looking your best.

Social media mimics real relationships — in many cases. Would you do the following within real face-to-face relationships?

  • Jump on the friendship bandwagon without properly introducing yourself?
  • Consistently talk about yourself and promote only yourself without regard for those around you?
  • Randomly approach a friend you barely talk to and simply ask for favors — repeatedly?
  • Introduce yourself to another person as “Pink House Gardening?”

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may need a refresher course on social media etiquette — and perhaps real-life etiquette also. Here are some egregious sins that you must not perform on social media sites. Avoid these violations and learn how to manage and maintain online relationships on a variety of popular social media sites. (more…)
